XRP (XRP)
Asset ID: 3
XRP is the native digital asset of the XRP Ledger (XRPL), a blockchain designed primarily for payments. It is used to process transactions on the network and to act as a bridge between different currencies within the XRPL’s built-in decentralized exchange.
XRP operates on the XRP Ledger, an open-source, permissionless, and decentralized blockchain created in 2012 with a focus on fast and efficient payments. Transactions typically settle within 3–5 seconds and are validated through a network of trusted validators.
The asset enables direct transfers without intermediaries, making it useful for fast cross-currency exchanges and global payments. It is traded freely on the market and is commonly used for cross-border transfers and microtransactions, as well as providing liquidity across different assets.
XRP has supported large-scale usage, with billions of transactions processed and over a trillion dollars in total value transferred since its launch. It is known for low fees, high speed, and quick settlement times of around 3–5 seconds, costing only fractions of a cent per transaction.
Built specifically for payments, XRP was designed as a faster, cheaper, and more energy-efficient alternative to earlier cryptocurrencies.
Technology behind XRP
XRP is the native token of the XRP Ledger, an open-source decentralized blockchain focused on payments. It is optimized for high performance, offering near-instant (~3 seconds) transaction finality, very low fees (around $0.0002), and high throughput (over 1,500 transactions per second), with a carbon-neutral footprint.
The XRPL uses a Federated Consensus mechanism, where at least 80% of validators must agree for a new ledger to be confirmed and added. It was also among the first blockchains to include a built-in decentralized exchange. The network has processed over 85 million ledgers and billions of transactions without major failures or security breaches since 2012.
