Solana is an independent Layer 1 blockchain designed as a high-performance network with an integrated smart contract framework. Since its launch in 2020, it has frequently been referred to as an “Ethereum killer” due to its significantly faster transaction processing, very low fees, and developer-oriented architecture.
Its scalability, combined with low costs and high throughput, has made Solana a popular platform for NFT applications, decentralized finance (DeFi), and blockchain-based payment systems.
The network is built to handle a large volume of transactions with minimal delay, achieved through its Proof-of-History (PoH) mechanism. Solana is capable of processing up to 65,000 transactions per second, placing it among the fastest blockchains in the industry.
It works by cryptographically ordering transactions into a verifiable sequence of network activity, which removes the need for traditional timestamp coordination or extensive validator checks on transaction ordering.
Founded in 2017 by software engineer Anatoly Yakovenko and COO Raj Gokal, Solana initially introduced its PoH system before layering a Proof-of-Stake (PoS) consensus mechanism on top of it.
SOL, the native token of the network, is essential for its operation. It is used for staking to help secure the blockchain and support validators, as well as for paying transaction fees across P2P transfers, DeFi protocols, NFT markets, and other decentralized applications within the Solana ecosystem. The token also follows an inflation-control model, where a portion of transaction fees is burned to help manage supply over time, and it can be used in governance processes that influence protocol development.
