Litecoin (LTC)
Asset ID: 15
Litecoin (LTC) is a decentralized peer-to-peer cryptocurrency that was launched in 2011 as a fork of Bitcoin. It was designed to enable quicker and more affordable digital payments, becoming one of the earliest alternative cryptocurrencies. The network runs on its own blockchain while preserving many of Bitcoin’s core design principles.
A major distinction of Litecoin is its adoption of the Scrypt hashing algorithm, which differs from Bitcoin’s SHA-256. This contributes to faster block creation times and typically lower transaction costs.
The project was created by Charlie Lee, a former Google engineer, with the goal of improving the efficiency of blockchain-based payments for everyday use. Over the years, Litecoin has continued to operate through multiple market cycles and is still used for direct payments as well as international transfers.
Its monetary system is based on a halving mechanism that reduces miner rewards approximately every four years. The most recent halving occurred on August 2, 2023, decreasing the block reward from 12.5 LTC to 6.25 LTC. This process controls the issuance of new coins and supports a fixed supply structure.
As of late 2025, Litecoin remains supported by various payment services and is available on major cryptocurrency exchanges. The total supply is capped at 84 million LTC, with around 76.66 million LTC already in circulation.
