Dash (DASH)
Asset ID: 31
Dash (DASH) is a digital currency and blockchain system developed to enable quicker and more cost-effective global payments. It was created as an improvement over early Bitcoin limitations, especially regarding transaction speed and privacy features.
The project originally launched in January 2014 as a fork of Litecoin and was first called XCoin. Later, it was rebranded to Darkcoin and eventually to Dash, which stands for “digital cash.” Dash introduced a two-tier architecture powered by masternodes—special servers that enable advanced functions such as near-instant transactions, optional privacy features, and stronger network security.
DASH is the native token of the network. It is used for paying transaction fees and for operating masternodes, which requires locking a certain amount of DASH as collateral. In exchange, masternode operators help maintain the blockchain and earn rewards for their contribution.
Dash was founded by Evan Duffield and Kyle Hagan. Duffield, who had experience in software development and finance, aimed to build a cryptocurrency with enhanced privacy compared to Bitcoin. He started working on Dash in 2012, and the network officially launched in 2014. Hagan contributed to the initial whitepaper but left the project the same year.
The Dash network relies on masternodes that not only process transactions but also participate in governance by voting on proposals and protocol upgrades. This system enables features such as InstantSend for fast payments, PrivateSend for optional transaction privacy, and ChainLocks for improved blockchain security.
At present, Dash has a circulating supply of approximately 12.47 million DASH, with a maximum supply capped at 18.9 million DASH.
