BNB is a digital asset used for trading and paying transaction fees on the Binance exchange. It also functions as the native token of the BNB Chain ecosystem. As one of the most widely used utility tokens, BNB supports a broad range of applications and use cases.
BNB was first distributed through an Initial Coin Offering (ICO) held between June 26 and July 3, 2017, shortly before the Binance exchange officially launched. The token was initially priced at 1 ETH for 2,700 BNB or 1 BTC for 20,000 BNB. Even though it was introduced via an ICO, BNB does not grant any ownership rights in Binance or a share of its profits.
BNB is used in many ways both inside the BNB Chain ecosystem and in external applications. It was originally issued as an ERC-20 token on Ethereum before migrating to the native BNB Chain. While the initial maximum supply was 200 million tokens, the circulating supply has been steadily reduced over time due to regular token burns. Currently, the circulating supply is around 144 million BNB.
What was the Fermi hard fork?
The Fermi hard fork was a network upgrade on BNB Smart Chain (BSC) completed on January 14, 2026. It shortened block generation time from 0.75 seconds to 0.45 seconds, allowing faster transaction processing. The upgrade also improved fast finality mechanisms to enhance network stability and predictability as on-chain usage grows.
