Cardano (ADA)
Asset ID: 9
Cardano is a third-generation proof-of-stake (PoS) blockchain built to deliver scalability, security, and sustainability through a foundation of peer-reviewed research and evidence-driven development.
The origins of Cardano trace back to Charles Hoskinson, a mathematician and entrepreneur who also co-founded Ethereum. In 2014, he left the project due to differing views on Ethereum’s long-term direction. His goal was to create a blockchain capable of solving key challenges such as scalability, security, and sustainability. This led to the establishment of Input Output Hong Kong in 2015.
Over time, Cardano has introduced a number of notable innovations:
Hydra – a Layer 2 scaling solution capable of handling thousands of transactions per second.
Mithril – enhances node synchronization and overall network efficiency.
EVM-compatible sidechain – improves interoperability and enables developers to run Ethereum-based smart contracts on Cardano.
The native cryptocurrency, ADA, powers the Cardano ecosystem and supports a wide range of applications and services. Beyond being used for transaction fees, staking to secure the network, and participating in on-chain governance, ADA also facilitates smart contract execution, decentralized finance (DeFi), NFT platforms, and more, making it a versatile asset within the network.
What is Cardano’s upcoming Van Rossem hard fork?
Cardano’s next major upgrade, expected in early 2026, is the Van Rossem hard fork, an intra-era update introducing Protocol Version 11.
Unlike earlier major upgrades such as Chang and Plomin, which emphasized governance improvements, Van Rossem focuses primarily on technical enhancements. It is designed to optimize Plutus smart contract performance, add new cryptographic built-ins, and refine ledger rules to improve both efficiency and developer flexibility.
